Mr. Doug Hamby, 74, of Luthersville, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at his home.
Mr. Hamby was born March 2, 1942, in LaGrange, son of the late Joe and Emma Burgess Hamby. A resident of Meriwether County for 42 years, he retired as an orthotist from Roosevelt Institute for Rehabilitation in Warm Springs and later retired from Meriwether EMS and Newnan Utilities. He was a deacon of Luthersville Baptist Church, was an Emergency Medical Technician, and had served as assistant chief of Meriwether County Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid fisherman, was an excellent craftsman, and was known to be able to make anything from wood or metal.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa Hamby of Luthersville; daughter and son in-law, Stephanie and John Weiher of Lone Oak; sisters and their husbands, Betty and Joe Varricchio of Texas, Joan and Malchom Castleberry of Shiloh, Wendy and Joe Madison of LaGrange; brothers and their wives, David and Miriam Hamby of Pine Mountain Valley, Roger and Betty Ann Hamby of Hamilton; father in-law, Bill Cook of Luthersville; sister in-law and her husband, Shelia and Craig Simpson, also of Luthersville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his faithful canine companion, Blackie.
A memorial service will be conducted at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, May 19, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Rev. John Pate will officiate and interment will be in the Luthersville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 until 5 Thursday afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meriwether County Fire and Rescue, Station 3 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
