Wayne Smith

August 10, 1945 — July 15, 2019

Mr. Wayne Smith, 73, of the St. Marks Community of Meriwether County, passed away Monday, July 15, 2019, at the VA Medical Center in Decatur. Mr. Smith was born August 10, 1945, in Hogansville, son of the late Harvey and Elsie Shirey Smith. A U.S. Army veteran, he received three Purple Hearts for his service as a Technical Sergeant during the Vietnam War. He lived in Meriwether County most of his life, beginning his career as a textile supervisor, but spending most of his working life as a government contractor in various capacities. Mr. Smith's passion was landscaping for himself and for others, and he came to know the love of Christ in his latter years. Survivors include his wife, Vickie Smith of St. Marks; daughter and son in-law, Ginger and Matt Christy of Peachtree City; brothers, Raymond Smith of Grantville, Paul Smith of Rome; and grandchildren, Edynn and Solomon Christy. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 18, at Union Baptist Church in St. Marks. Pastor Alex Montgomery will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery, with military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 Wednesday night. Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville is in charge of arrangements.
