REV. DAVID PICKARD
The Reverend Samuel David Pickard, Jr., 54, of Lanett, AL, and affectionately known as "Coach Pic", died Friday, March 25, 2011, in Birmingham, AL.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 28, at First United Methodist Church of West Point. Lee Gilliland, Skip McCoy, and the Reverend Mike Densmore will officiate and interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Lanett.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 Sunday night at McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point.
Born February 16, 1957, in Birmingham, Mr. Pickard graduated from Lanett High School and received an Associate of Science from Southern Union State Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management from Faulkner University, and a Master of Education from Strayer University. He was a Certified Professional Educator in Math and Drivers Education and was also a part time local minister, serving at Bethel Christian Church in Franklin.
For more than ten years, he coached football, basketball, softball, track and baseball. He attained a record of 116-38 in basketball, and his teams were state finalists in Class 4A in 1997 and state finalists in Class 2A in 2005 and 2006. He was named Opelika-Auburn News Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2A Football Assistant Coach of the Year for 2011. Coach Pic will always be remembered as a well respected educator, coach and role model for his students, friends, and family.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Kathy T. Pickard of Lanett; children, James David Pickard of New Orleans, LA and Lauren A. Pickard of Lanett; his mother, Dorothy Duncan Pickard of Valley, AL; and his brother, Robert Pickard of Beulah, AL. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Samuel D. Pickard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Christian Church, 660 Glenn Rd., Franklin, GA 30217, or to Alabama High School Athletic Association in Montgomery, AL.
