Sarah Starr Hutchinson

March 3, 1925 — August 17, 2019

Mrs. Sarah Ellen Starr Hutchinson, 94, of Greenville, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2019, at Warm Springs Medical Center Nursing Home. Sarah was born March 3, 1925 in Greenville, where she lived all but a few years of her life. Sarah was the youngest child of Joseph Tenth Starr and Marie Georgia Barnes Starr. Her one sister, Ruth Starr Lundin, and three brothers, Robert Arless Starr, Joseph Tenth Starr, Jr., and Col. John Bernard Starr all were raised in Greenville during the difficult depression years. The Starr family was always close-knit and would always support each other throughout their lives. During her teen years, Sarah contracted tuberculosis and spent several years in Rome, GA convalescing. Perhaps, Sarah's well-known feisty spirit was born during these challenging times as she was left without the use of one lung the rest of her life, although this loss, did not prevent her from living a long and productive life. Sarah met the love of her life, Tyre Bray Hutchinson from Harris City, and was married in Jackson, MS on February 6, 1951. Tyre joined the U.S. Coast Guard at 17 and would spend the next 30 years serving the country and traveling the world as a member of the Merchant Marines. Sarah would often meet Tyre at various shipping ports in the Southeast bringing him home cooked Southern meals. During the time Tyre was away, Sarah filled her days with many responsibilities including taking care of her mother "Mama Starr" and tending to many of the necessities of home keeping and community involvement. For most of her life Sarah was a member of Greenville United Methodist Church. Sarah had many friends in Greenville who loved her and appreciated her lively personality and knowledge of local news and goings on. Many of her nieces, nephews, and relatives knew Sarah for her humor, love of dogs, good cooking, and her unpretentious southern charm and zestful personality. In her later years, when she had outlived many of her friends and family, she continued to maintain her home independently with the help of Rocky, her Labrador companion and could often be seen on the hottest of Georgia days atop her Husqvarna riding mower. Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Tyre Bray Hutchinson and her infant daughter, Ruth Starr Hutchinson. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and their families. The memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 28, at the graveside in the Greenville Cemetery, with the Reverend Jan Oglesbee officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greenville United Methodist Church. Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville is in charge of arrangements.
