MR. ROBERT B. CATO Robert B. Cato, 66, died August 16, 2014 at Roosevelt Warm Springs Long Term Acute Care Hospital. Robert was born April 3, 1948 in Greenville, to James H. (Pete) and Mary Elizabeth Dollar Cato. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Gene and Larry Cato and sister Karen Cato Stitcher. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan Gilbert Cato, brother and sister-in-law James H. Jr. and Dorothy Cato, sister Patricia Cato Hurst, all of Greenville and brother-in-law Russell Stitcher of Moreland, GA. Along with several nieces and nephews. Rob and Susan also have had several beloved canine family members over the years and he currently leaves Sadie and Dog to grieve his passing. Rob grew up in the small town of Greenville. His given name of Robert Bacon came from the physician who delivered him, Dr. Robert Bacon Gilbert. Since he was the fourth son delivered, Dr. Gilbert jokingly said this one should be named after him and that was the name he was given. He was known as Rob and also "little brother", a name Mrs. Lillian Woodruff began calling him as a young boy as he was one of three brothers who worked at Woodruff's Grocery for a time. After graduation from Greenville High he served in the US Army during the Vietnam war era but was stationed in South Korea for 15 months. Rob returned home to Greenville in 1971 and within the span of a few weeks, had met his wife to be Susan and went to work with Georgia Power in Greenville with the help of Mr. Red Harpe. With his job at Georgia Power, over the course of 6 years, Rob and Susan lived in Richland, Edison and Buena Vista, where he worked out of the local offices and made many lasting friendships, especially during the 14 years in Buena Vista which he considered his second hometown. He retired from Georgia Power in 2003 after 32 years of service. Rob was an active member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Manchester, and was also active in the American Legion Post 186 in Greenville. The funeral service for Rob will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Macedonia Baptist Church in Manchester with interment in Greenville Cemetery. Visitation will be at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home Monday, August 18, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.. Active pallbearers will be Josh, Jim and Zach Bailey, Allen and Adam Hand and Wes Cooke. Honorary pallbearers will be members of American Legion Post 186. Flowers will be accepted or memorial gifts may be given to Macedonia Baptist Church Property Fund, 280 Wrightsville Rd., Manchester, GA 31816.
