Richard Alvin Cunningham, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, the 8th of March, 2023.
Richard was born on July 22, 1946, in San Antonio, TX. He grew up in Miami, Florida, until he was 13 years old and then moved to Hogansville, Georgia. He joined the US Army in 1964 and studied at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. He was stationed in California, Japan, and Vietnam.
In 1972, Richard and his wife, Sandy moved to Cartersville from Carrollton after graduating from West Georgia College. He was an educator for the Bartow County School System for 30 years, working as a teacher, assistant principal, and a coach at Emerson Elementary, Cass Elementary, Cass Middle, and Adairsville Middle Schools. He worked for a time at Georgia Department of Labor. In his retirement, he played tennis and bridge with his friends regularly and traveled around the country.
Mr. Cunningham is preceded in death by his brother, William Cranston and his nephew, Jeremy Spradlin. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-three years, Sandra Magee Cunningham; son, Kevin (Della) Cunningham; daughter, Judith Cunningham; granddaughter, Hope Cunningham; sister, Sherry Meacham; nephew, Danny Spradlin; nieces, Gwenn (Scott) Whittington and Michelle (Chris) Johnston.
Funeral Services will be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 15th of March, 2023 at Cartersville Church of the Ascension with Rev. Denise Ronn officiating.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the evening until eight on Tuesday, the 14th of March, 2023 at Owen Funeral Home.
