R. D. (Pat) Murphy, Jr.

MR. R. D. (PAT) MURPHY, JR. Mr. R. D. (Pat) Murphy, Jr., 89, of Greenville, died Thursday, October 1, 2009, at Hospice LaGrange. The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, October 4, at Greenville Baptist Church. The Rev. Jonathan Porter will officiate and interment will be in the Greenville Cemetery, with Masonic graveside rites. Pallbearers will be Calvin Harmon, Floyd Strickland, Jim Byce, Joe Murphy, Micky Hardeman, and Chuck Tigner. Mr. Murphy was born December 25, 1919, in Meriwether county, son of the late Robert Daniel (Bud) Murphy and the late Edna Quigley Murphy. An Army veteran of World War Two, he was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County, was a member and deacon of Greenville Baptist Church, and was a member of Greenville American Legion Post #186. A longtime cattle farmer, Mr. Murphy retired from the Greenville Post Office after serving as Postmaster and as a rural mail carrier, and was a member of the Rural Mail Carriers Association and the Meriwether County Cattlemen's Association. He was a member of Greenville Masonic Lodge #321, was Past High Priest, was a member of Hiram Warner Hill Chapter #8 Royal Arch Masons-Griffin Commandry, and was 14th degree and 32nd degree Mason-Valley of Columbus. He was an avid bowler and was a sports enthusiast, whether serving as a participant, coach, official, or bus driver transporting the team. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bonnie Barlow Murphy of Greenville; daughter and son in-law, Linda and Kirk Coonley of Overland Park, KS; son, Robert Daniel Murphy, III and his wife, Debbie, of Lawrenceville; sister, Esther Norris of Jacksonville, FL; sister in-law, Doris Murphy of Gainesville; grandchildren, Jana Argabright of Avon, OH, Daniel Coonley of North Hollywood, CA, and Robert Patrick Murphy of Clayton; great-grandchildren, Anna Argabright, Allie Argabright, and Lainee Murphy, and a number of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Greenville Baptist Church, P. O. Box 458, Greenville, GA 30222, or to a charity of the donor's choosing are appreciated. Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville is in charge of arrangements.
