Mary Frances Spates

Mrs. Mary Frances Spates, 85 of LaGrange, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2026, at Carrollton Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born January 3, 1941, in Heard County, Mrs. Spates was the daughter of the late Hubert Buford Cosper and Agnes Mae Nelson Cosper. She was a resident of Troup County for over 50 years, worked for Milliken and Company for 10 years and Interface Flooring for 17 years. Known as a hard worker, Mrs. Spates enjoyed relaxing at the lake and fishing. She was Baptist by faith and loved her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandy Ann (Ronnie) Buttrum of Port Orange FL; sisters, Virginia Gripado of Douglasville and Betty Ann Joy of Franklin; brothers, Tilmon Cosper of LaGrange and Benny (Ruby) Cosper of Franklin; grandchildren, Tammy Gay, Adam Gay, and Keely Buttrum; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Spates was preceded in death by her son, Douglas Wendell Gay; sister, Flossie Cosper; and a brother, Troy Cosper.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 25, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home. The Reverend Lynn Janney will officiate and interment will be in Meadoway Gardens Cemetery in LaGrange.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 until 2 Sunday afternoon.
