Mrs. Mary Carol Ard, 73, of Brookhaven, passed away Monday, August 1, 2022, at Sunrise at Buckhead Senior Living.
Mrs. Ard was born January 6, 1949, in Fort Worth, Texas, daughter of the late Mary Lillian Culpepper Harris and the late Reverend Robert Harris. A member of Wieuca Road Baptist Church in Atlanta, she retired as a special education para-professional from the DeKalb County School System, having taught in Dekalb and Fulton Counties. Mary Carol loved music and art and was especially talented in painting landscapes in water-color. When Mary Carol was two, her parents were appointed as Baptist missionaries to Peru, and she spent a considerable part of her youth there. Throughout the rest of her life, she continued to have a keen interest in South America, and to connect with the Spanish-speaking community in Atlanta.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, John Vaughn Ard and survivors include her brother, Robert Harris and his wife Maigread of County Leitrim, Ireland and their children Daniel Harris of San Francisco, CA and Lillian Harris of County Leitrim; her sister, Ruth Barker and her husband Greg and their daughter and son in-law, Beth and Robie Millican and grandchildren Myla Millican and Sheperd Millican all of St. Simons Island, GA. Mary Carol is also survived by her step-mother, Ruth Harris of the St. Marks Community of Meriwether County, GA and Ruth's sons and their families, as well as a number of dear and close cousins.
Mary Carol spent the last year of her life at the Sunrise Assisted Living facility in Brookhaven, Georgia, where she developed wonderful friendships, and found a new home full of love and care. Her family are extremely grateful to the caring and loving staff there.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 3, at Union Baptist Church in the St. Marks Community. Dr. Wright Culpepper will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will greet friends before and after the funeral service at the church.
