Mr. John Wesley Peterson, age 96, of Woodbury, passed away Monday, June 29, 2026, at Warm Springs Medical Center Nursing Home.
Mr. Peterson was born May 8, 1930, in Atkinson County, Georgia, son of the late Dennis Peterson and Myrtle Corbett Peterson. A veteran of service in the U.S. Army, he served as a jail chaplain in Jasper, Alabama, and lived in Sargent before making his home in Meriwether County 40 years ago. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Coweta County, loved being with his grandchildren, and was an avid fisherman who enjoyed eating the fish that he caught.
Survivors include his daughter, Cindy Collins and her husband Tommy Collins of Waverly, TN; sons, John Wesley Peterson, Jr. of Hogansville, Glenn Peterson and his wife Teresa Peterson of Woodbury; grandchildren, Daniel Peterson, Dixie Cook, Stacy Henderson, Calvin Lee Johns, Sr., Holly Michelle Johns, Christianne Rebecca Johns, George Wesley Story; and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Joan Peterson, Peggy Peterson, and Claudia Peterson.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, July 2, at the graveside in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery in Coweta County, with the Reverend Carl Calhoun officiating.
The family will receive friends at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m., Thursday.
