Mrs. Joanne Smith Cantrell, 76, of Wedowee, AL, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, AL.
Mrs. Cantrell was born August 10, 1939, in Randolph County, AL, daughter of the late Bowden Smith and Lula Edmondson Smith Sheppard. A resident of Wedowee for the past ten years, she lived in Coweta County most of her life and was the retired owner of Mr. C's Mini Mart and Our Lady's Rosary Angel Shop, both in Grantville. She was a former Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, was a former member of the Grantville Garden Club, and was a member of St. George Catholic Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Nawana Winkles and her finacee Hiram Massengale of Wedowee, Felicia Doler and her husband J.C. Doler of Grantville; sons, David Cantrell of Roanoke, AL, Randy Cantrell and his wife Sharon Cantrell, of Roanoke; sister and brother in-law, Sybil and Jim Flake of Columbus; brothers and sisters in-law, Dudley and Vernette Smith, Larry Sheppard, Michael Sheppard, Charles Sheppard, and Nathan Sheppard, all of Roanoke, Paul and Kathy Sheppard of Fredonia; brother in-law, James and Dannette Cantrell of Big Canoe; sisters in-law, Mary Edith Watkins of Newnan, Jane Cantrell of Beaufort, NC; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Cantrell.
The funeral mass will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 19, at St. George Catholic Church in Newnan, with interment in the Grantville Cemetery.
The rosary will be said at 5:30 p.m., Friday at the funeral home and the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
