Janet Stone Smith

Nov 5, 1938 — Jul 23, 2026

Newnan

Mrs. Janet Stone Smith, age 87, of Newnan, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Harbor Grace Hospice in Atlanta.

Mrs. Smith was born November 5, 1938, in LaGrange, daughter of the late Joseph Otto Stone and Willie Mae Crowell Stone, and was raised in Hogansville, Georgia. Her roots in Hogansville remained an important part of her life, and she maintained friendships and connections there throughout the years.

A graduate of Hogansville High School, Janet was remembered even in her school days for her talents and outgoing spirit. As a member of the Class of 1956, she was selected by her classmates as “Most Talented,” an early reflection of the personality and gifts she would share throughout her life.

Janet married J. Bert Smith, and together they built their life and raised their family in Newnan. They were the parents of two sons, Stanley Dee “Stan” Smith and Brian Lee Smith. Through the years, Janet’s greatest joy was found in her family, and she treasured her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Professionally, Mrs. Smith retired from Bank of America after almost 50 years of service in the banking industry. She enjoyed her career and the daily interaction with banking customers, and later also enjoyed volunteering as a poll worker during election seasons.

Her greatest joy came from her relationship with her Lord Jesus Christ, and she cherished her longtime membership East Newnan Baptist Church. Over the years at East Newnan, she served as a youth leader, Sunday school teacher, and prayer group member, but most loved her time as a member of the choir. Janet had a beautiful voice and used this gift from God to glorify Him and uplift others.

She shared many years of marriage with Bert before his death in 2010. She later endured the loss of their son Stan in 2022. Through those losses and the many seasons of her life, Janet remained deeply connected to the family and friends she loved.

Janet is survived by her son, Brian (Kelly) Smith of Newnan; daughter-in-law, Marcia Smith Adams of Newnan; her grandchildren, Deanne Rosso (Brandon) of Athens; Drew Smith (Krissy) of Newnan; and great-grandsons, Blake Rosso, Brooks Rosso, and Bradley Rosso of Athens.

In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband, J. Bert Smith; son, Stanley Dee “Stan” Smith; brother, Joseph C. “Buddy” Stone; and her sisters, Jean Stone Windom and Betty Ann Stone Hanner.

The family will receive friends for visitation and viewing from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, at East Newnan Baptist Church.

A memorial service will be conducted on Monday, July 27, at 1:00 p.m. at East Newnan Baptist Church, with the Reverend Bobby Stevenson, the Reverend Frank Powers, and the Reverend Max McCord officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.
