Retired Firefighter/EMT James Derek Boyd, 64, of Senoia, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2024.
He was born in Fort Rucker, AL on November 22, 1959, son of the late James Harley Boyd and Annette Wright Boyd. Derek lived most of his life in Hogansville, relocating to Peachtree City after marrying the love of his life, Susan. The couple recently relocated to Senoia. He was a compassionate, thoughtful and very caring man. He was admired for his courage, outstanding achievements and noble qualities. It can be said that wherever Derek went he never met a stranger and was a friend to all.
Derek followed his calling and became a Firefighter at a very young age in 1977, beginning his career as a volunteer Firefighter. He served a total of 37 years as a Firefighter/EMT. While working in Troup County, he would often be relied upon to assist in other jurisdictions in the capacity of Firefighter/EMT. He could be found ending one shift as a firefighter, only to turn around and work for Meriwether County EMS the next day. He was a loyal servant to his community and he had great pride in being a Firefighter/EMT. His dedication to helping others extended far beyond his years of service to Troup and Meriwether communities.
The simplest pleasures brought great joy to Derek. He enjoyed the peace and tranquility of being out in the fresh air and listening to the sounds of nature while hunting, fishing, and camping on the lake. He loved antique guns and American history; however, Derek's favorite thing in life was spending time with his family.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Susan, and his loyal furry companion, SophieLee. He is also survived by his children, Brandy (Russell) Shoemake, Tyler (Autumn) Rumbaugh, Jamie (JD) Boyd, and Dylan Rumbaugh; grandchildren, Bailey, Mason, Dylan, Kylie, Miley, Ryker, and Stryder; sister, Robbie (Eric) Burke; twin brother, David (Crystal) Boyd; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Danny "Dobie" Boyd; and his twin grandchildren, Artemis and Apollo Boyd.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 28, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville, with the Reverend Rusty Creel officiating. Interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville with fire service honors.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, prior to the service.
