H. Y. "Pete" Johnson

May 12, 1938 — October 10, 2022

Mr. H. Y. "Pete" Johnson, 84, formerly of the Lone Oak Community of Meriwether County, passed away Monday, October 10, 2022, at his home in Sharpsburg.

"Mr. Pete" was born May 12, 1938, in Luthersville, son of the late Henry Franklin Johnson and Lizzie Gill Johnson. A veteran of service in the U.S. Army, he served as the Meriwether County Tax Assessor for 10 years and then as the County's elected Tax Commissioner for 25 years prior to his retirement. He was a devoted member of Allen-Lee Memorial United Methodist Church in Lone Oak, where he served in numerous leadership roles. He was also a former member of the Greenville Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post 186, the Georgia Association of Tax Officials, and the County Officers Association of Georgia. Pete was married to the love of his life, the former Ann Lee, for over 62 years, and in that time they visited all 50 states and beyond. Pete had a playful side and always felt at home with kids – especially his grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews – while also always providing support for his elders or others in need.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Johnson of Sharpsburg; daughters, LeeAnn and Mark Kitchens of Sharpsburg, Laurie J. Bartlett and Herbert Crawford of Newnan; son William Johnson and Erin Matson of Washington, DC; six granddaughters – Kristen, Jessica, Katie, Tori, Kelsey and Winnie – and numerous honorary grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who loved their "Pete" dearly. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Henrietta Plant, Mary Ann Ackerman, Betty Smith; and his brother, Herschel Johnson.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, October 13, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Kory Trinrud, the Reverend Michael McFarlin, and the Reverend Brigette Kemink will officiate and interment will be in Allen-Lee Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery, with military honors.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
