MR. GEORGE BURIN SMALLWOOD
Mr. George Burin Smallwood, 102, formerly of Hogansville, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Brightmoor Nursing Center in Griffin.
Mr. Smallwood was born December 20, 1912, in Carroll County, son of the late George Titus Smallwood and Julie Ann Hembree Smallwood. An Army veteran of World War Two, he served as a corporal in the 2nd Armored Division. He was Baptist by faith, retired from Uniroyal, Inc., and then worked as a self-employed carpenter. He lived many years at the corner of International St. and Green Ave. in Hogansville, where he was known for his bountiful vegetable gardens, and had lived at Brightmoor Assisted Living Center for seven years, where he had become a master at completing jigsaw puzzles.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Chandler Smallwood and is survived by his daughter and son in-law, JoAnn and Frank Hornsby of Jonesboro; grandchildren, Robert Hornsby of Griffin, Tonya Hornsby Smallwood of Fayetteville; great-grandchildren, Lauren Hornsby, Jacob Hornsby, Matthew Smallwood and Clayton Smallwood; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 7, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Johnny Ridgeway and Mr. Larry Smallwood will officiate and interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.
