Gary Martin Smith

March 28, 1949 — July 16, 2016

Mr. Gary Martin Smith, 67, of LaGrange and formerly of Hogansville, passed peacefully in his sleep at his home on Saturday, July 16, 2016. Mr. Smith was born March 28, 1949, in Jacksonville, FL, son of the late James Lewis Smith and Mary Clyde Simmons Smith Clark. A 1967 graduate of Hogansville High School, he was a veteran of service in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, served as Mayor of Hogansville from 1990 until 1992, and was a member of First United Methodist Church of LaGrange. Mr. Smith spent 30 years in the automobile business, serving as a salesman, a sales manager, and an owner. Also known as "Daddy G", he was well-loved by many. Survivors include his wife, Rumi Smith of LaGrange; children, Leah Karvelas and her fiancé Robert Smith of Shadyside, MD, Christi Smith of LaGrange, Charles Smith and his wife Casey of LaGrange, Yurii Crockett and her husband, Jeremy of Franklin; sister, Laura Proctor of Oak Harbor, WA; brothers, Dr. James Smith of Pensacola and Vernon Smith and Danny Denn of Atlanta; and grandchildren, Nicholas Karvelas, Ciera Karvelas, Alec Karvelas, Shaylee Smith, Mary Smith, Trevor Garcia, Kallee Crockett, Aubrey Crockett, Preston Lee Crockett, Zayne Smith, Arabella Herald. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Phillip W. Smith. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 20, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Blake Trent and the Reverend Dennis Rollins will officiate and interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 Tuesday night and at other times will be at the home of Charles and Casey Smith. Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
