MR. FRED J. NEWMAN Mr. Fred J. Newman, 82, of the St. Marks Community of Meriwether County, died Friday, May 6, 2011, at his home. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 8, at Union Baptist Church in St. Marks. The Reverend Searcy Jackson and the Reverend Bill Smith will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 Saturday night. Mr. Newman was born March 24, 1929, in Meriwether County, son of the late Issac Cheney Newman and the late Leila Mae Moreland Newman. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County and retired as a supervisor from Uniroyal, Inc. He was a member and deacon of Union Baptist Church, was church treasurer, and was a former Sunday School superintendent. Survivors include his daughter and son in-law, Patsy and Lamar Spradlin of Valley, AL; grandson, Jeremy Spradlin and his wife, Courtney, of Monticello; and great-grandchildren, Cutter Spradlin, Ava Grace Spradlin, and Hudson Spradlin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Wheelus Newman. Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville is in charge of arrangements.
