Rev. Eugene Powers, 84, of Hogansville, passed away Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center.
Rev. Powers was born December 22, 1937, in Newnan, son of the late Frank and Pauline Payton Powers. A veteran of service in the U.S. Army, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from LaGrange College and worked as a dairyman, as an insurance agent, operated floral and ceramic sales, and taught Spanish at Hogansville High School and LaFayette Christian School. His most important works in life were being a loving and caring father and loving and serving the Lord. He loved Mexico and made numerous mission trips there as well as to Guatemala, Honduras, and Cuba. A member of Grace Covenant Worship Center in Hogansville, Rev. Powers was fluent in Spanish and enjoyed assisting local Hispanic churches.
Survivors include his children, Jimmy Eugene Powers, Jr. (Sonya), Tyre Powers (Vickie) all of Hogansville, Chuck Calhoun (Karin) of Mesquite, TX, Tina Calhoun, Shawn Powers, Sr. (Jill) all of Newnan, Miguel Powers (Elizabeth) of LaGrange, Hector Becerra of Dallas, TX, Isael Castillo (Anna) and Johnny Castillo all of Hogansville; his brother, Rev. Frank Powers (Susie) of Newnan; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-granchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Lee Powers.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 9, at Grace Covenant Worship Center. Pastor Alex Montgomery will officiate and interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday.
