Elsie Monahan Downing

Mrs. Elsie Monahan Downing, 93, of Hogansville, passed away Friday, March 25, 2022, at Carrollton Nursing and Rehab Center. Mrs. Downing was born October 14, 1928, in Hogansville, daughter of the late Russell Young Smith and Gertrude Shinn Smith. She was a military wife for many years and lived in many locations before returning to Hogansville in 1965. A member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in LaGrange, she was very active in the Newnan Moose Lodge for many years, participated in bowling leagues, enjoyed tending to her plants, and was a talented artist. Survivors include her children, Georgette Smallwood of Carrollton; Wanda Davis of Hogansville, Robin LeeAnn Downing and Joyce Branton, both of Spokane, WA, Gladys Ladd of Grantville, Sandra Spain (Audy) of Franklin, Chuck Trim (Kathy) of Navarre, FL, Vi Ashmore (Ray) of Hogansville, Sherrill Stanley of Flowerville, MI, and Daniel Eddy of Ohio; a number of grandchildren including Jonathan Earl Smallwood, Barbara Elizabeth Howell (Chad), Elizabeth Marie Musick; and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Downing is preceded in death by her husbands, John G. Monahan and Jarey Downing; son, Richard Monahan; daughters, Mary Monahan, Susanne Reich, Debbie Trim; and grandson, Matthew Norton. The funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Friday, April 1, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Timothy Gadziala will officiate and interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Friday.
