Mr. Edwin Laurence Whitten, 84, of Luthersville, GA passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at his home.
Mr. Whitten was born September 3, 1932 in Rocky Mount, son of the late James and Alice Mae Crook Whitten. A veteran of service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he lived in Clayton County before returning to Luthersville in 1984 and retired from Southern Bell Telephone after 30 years of service. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Newnan, was a Mason, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He loved his family, farming, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing Santa Claus and worked as Santa at Callaway Gardens for 20 years.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Ed and Debbie Whitten of Pine Mountain, Donnie and Mildred Whitten of Buckhead, Bonnie and Stanley Payne of Canton, Johnnie Whitten of Thomaston, Connie Barlow of Newnan, Rondi and Bobby Wiggins of Canton; sister, Brenda and George Nihart of Waverly Hall; brothers, Warren and Jenell Whitten of Woodbury, Robert and Linda Whitten of Luthersville, Gary Whitten of Luthersville; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 25, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville, with Masonic rites. The Reverend Terry Rainwater will officiate and interment will be in the Strickland Cemetery in Meriwether County, with military honors.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 Friday night.
