MRS. CHARLENE W. NEWMAN Mrs. Charlene Wheelus Newman, 79, of the St. Marks Community of Meriwether County, died Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Hospice LaGrange. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 11, 2011, at Union Baptist Church in St. Marks. The Reverend Searcy Jackson and the Reverend Bill Smith will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 Thursday night. Mrs. Newman was born March 9, 1932, in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Charlie and Maggie Morris Wheelus. A lifelong resident of Meriwether County, she retired from Uniroyal, Inc. in Hogansville after 35 years service and was a member of Union Baptist Church, where she was a longtime member of the choir and had served as president of the WMU and as treasurer of the Adult Sunday School class. Survivors include her husband, Fred Newman of St. Marks; daughter and son in-law, Patsy and Lamar Spradlin of Valley, AL; grandson, Jeremy Spradlin and his wife, Courtney, of Monticello; great-grandchildren, Cutter Spradlin, Ava Grace Spradlin, and Hudson Spradlin; and sisters, Aldine Pierce of Sharpsburg, Kathryn Buice of Suwanee, Jeanette Cato of Lone Oak, and Betty Hunter of Moreland. Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville is in charge of arrangements. Visitation: from 6 until 8 Thursday night, March 10th, at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home Services: 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 11th, at Union Baptist Church in the St. Marks Community of Meriwether County Interment: Union Baptist Church Cemetery
