BARBARA PHELPS COWHER
Mrs. Barbara Phelps Cowher, age 89 of Newnan, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.
Mrs. Cowher was born May 28, 1937, and was the daughter of the late Henry Phelps and Irene Gorton Phelps. She never met a stranger. Whether she was waiting at a doctor's appointment or sitting in a restaurant, she would start a conversation with anyone, bringing her trademark friendliness to every interaction. It is no wonder she was so deeply loved by many. She found beauty and peace in the simple pleasures of nature and life-spending hours walking along the beach looking for shells, quietly watching hummingbirds, working on crossword puzzles, writing, and shopping. Mrs. Cowher was also a wonderful baker, famous for making the absolute best apple pies and dumplings.
Mrs. Cowher cherished spending time with her husband, her family, and her friends. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, she loved preaching the good news, studying the Bible, and sharing her deep knowledge with her students, finding immense joy in watching them get baptized. She loved her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren with all her heart, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, faith, and unconditional love.
Survivors include her husband, Mel Cowher; children, Melvyn (Patty) Cowher, Jr., Colleen Cauette, Christopher (Andrea) Cowher, Amy (Frank) Belzer, Tim (Kerry) Cowher, and Joel (Kim) Cowher; 17 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren on the way. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cowher was preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy, Gloria, and Sharon; and her brothers, Henry and Rodney.
The family will host a memorial service at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, July 4, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses 530 Old Atlanta Hwy, Newnan, GA 30263.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Jehovah's Witnesses at www.donate.jw.org
